Nancy ( With a Laughing Face)
Frank Sinatra
Something that I really enjoyed while listening to this song was the pure music that is displayed in crooners. Frank Sinatra, one of the most iconic vocalists of all time, sang this piece in a way that totally grabs the audience. Something I think is super important in music, that I thought stuck out, was showing of the vocalist when he deserves the spotlight. Often times songs have great vocalists, but the music and programming kind of get in the way of the gift that vocalists have. This song was an exception. They played back on the music and let Frank sing to take over the song. Crooning in general has grabbed audiences when making sure music is even with the singer.
I thought how interesting it is that these types of songs came out post war, when everything was starting to go back together. After the war, many soldiers just wanted to relax and singers like Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby had their chance to sing and make a lot of records. Why? Because crooning finds a way to relax the mind and soul. For me listening to this song is beautiful, but I know if i listened to it on repeat for a while, I would fall asleep. That was okay with people postwar! And I think the music industry was really smart to make those decisions in the right time frame to help the pop culture grow after a devastating war.
I agree that timing is everything with music! Certain genres and vocalists are most popular with what people want to listen to at the time. What people want to listen to, as you mentioned is typically based on what is going on such as the end of World War 2, working in the fields, or the Great Depression. Vocalists are using their voices as instruments so it is only fitting that they also are a part of the spotlight and contribute just as much as the music that supports them.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like an amazing song! I’ve always been a fan of Frank Sinatra, and I think your summary of his song gave him tribute. I liked your thought about when this song came out. I agree that it’s surprising that these songs came out after world war 2. I think that many needed this song after something like that. His song seems super fun!
